Port Gamble History & Photo Gallery

Port Gamble

Port Gamble is a privately owned Mill Town currently owned and operated by Olympic Property Group. Originally founded in 1853, by Maine businessmen Andrew Pope and William Talbot. Although the Mill is no longer in operation, it was the longest continuously operating Mill Town in North America. Visiting this charming town, its historic general store, and its turn-of-the-century Church, is an enriching experience on the Kitsap Peninsula. It is privately situated on scenic shores with breath taking view of Hood Canal. The National Historic Landmark, 120-acre town site, was founded in 1853 as a home for millworkers and their families and modeled after the familiar New England towns where its founders originated. Port Gamble was the oldest continuously operating Mill Town in North America when the lumber mill ceased operations in 1995. Now, efforts are under way to redevelop the town site, with new housing and condos, while keeping its historic charm boasting Maple and Elm Tree lined streets. The town hosts a variety of events throughout the year, including a Farmers Market, Arts & Crafts shows and a Medieval Fair . The town puts its charm on display each year for its Country Christmas, Muddy Paws Agility Trials, Civil War reenactments and Old Mill Days. . OPG is currently working on connecting the hiking/biking trails in North Kitsap in one singular unit, “The String of Pearls.”  Visit the Port Gamble Historic Museum located next to the Port Gamble General Store, or visit their web site below.

Little Boston

Little Boston is the seat of the Port Gamble S’Klallam Tribe. This community is said to be on the verge of transformation. After taking advantage of a funding opportunity from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the S’Klallam Tribe recently built and opened a new youth center on the 1,300-acre reservation. The youth center has a recording studio for the tribal members to celebrate their ancestors’ songs and make music of their own. The youth center joins the tribe’s renowned House of Knowledge, as a sign of unity and resurgence. The House of Knowledge opened in 2007 with a beautiful new expanded library. It also pays homage the S’Klallam culture with colorful tribal art, carvings, and story poles. , An additional accomplishment includs the first tribal Longhouse in over 100 years, an Elders Center and a Career and Education Center. The Port Gamble S’Klallam Tribe is descended from the Salish and owns and operates the Point Casino just off  the Hansville Hwy .
